My Review

“Sitting Pretty” is a comedy film about a family who hires the mysterious Lynn Belvedere as a nanny for their three sons. At first they think he is a woman, because of the name, but upon meeting him, decide to give him a try. The comedy proceeds from there, tightly directed by Walter Lang (“Mother Wore Tights” 1947) from a good screenplay by F. Hugh Herbert. It was adapted from the 1947 novel “Belvedere” by Gwen Davenport.

The talented cast includes Robert Young and Maureen O’Hara as the couple, Clifton Webb as the enigmatic Belvedere, as well as Louise Allbritton, Richard Haydn, Ed Begley, Randy Stuart, John Russell, Betty Ann Lynn, Willard Robertson, and Marion Marshall. The three sons are played by Larry Olson as Larry King, Anthony Sydes as Tony King, and Roddy McCaskill as Roddy King. Webb was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

The watchable black-and-white film “Sitting Pretty” was successful at the box office for 20th Century Fox. Two sequels were produced: “Mr. Belvedere Goes to College” (1949) and “Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell” (1951). A television show named “Mr. Belvedere” was aired on ABC from 1985-1990, starring Christopher Hewitt in the title role and Bob Uecker as his employer.
