“Sicario: Day of the Soldado” is an exciting action film dealing with issues along the United States-Mexico border like illegal immigration, drug cartels, and terror threats. Italian director Stefano Sollima was hired to take charge of this sequel, of sorts, to 2015’s “Sicario.” It is actually more of a stand-alone spinoff than a classic sequel.
Stars Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Jeffrey Donovan reprised their roles from the original. Newcomers added to this picture include Catherine Keener, Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Matthew Modine as the Secretary of Defense.
Director Sollima added experience from his Italian crime thrillers to this Columbia Pictures-Lionsgate production. “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” which translated means “Hitman: Day of the Soldier,” is an exciting and stylish crime drama thriller, with a fantastic screenplay written by Taylor Sheridan. A big flaw is that the many violent scenes earned this film an R rating.
