My Review

Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy were paired in a buddy cop film with mixed results. “Showtime” does not live up to expectations of featuring two major stars in this parody of police reality television programs, due to poor execution by director Tom Dey (“Shanghai Noon” 2000) and mediocre writing by Jorge Saralegui and Keith Sharon.

The film does have some redeeming moments that save it from becoming a total waste of time. William Shatner (of “T. J. Hooker” fame) appears as himself in a humorous scene giving advise to Murphy and De Niro on playing cops on television. Other co-stars include Rene Russo, Frankie Faison, Pedro Damian, Drena De Niro, Kadeem Hardison, Mos Def, Nestor Serrano, James Roday, and Johnny Cochran as himself.

“Showtime” was a disappointment at the box office for Village Roadshow Pictures, TriBeCa Productions, NPV Entertainment, Material Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for two Golden Raspberry Awards (‘Razzies”): Worst Actor for Eddie Murphy and Worst Screen Combo for Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro.
