My Review

“Shopgirl” is the story of a compex love triangle between a discontented salesgirl, a wealthy businessman, and an unambitious young man. The three principal actors, Claire Danes, Steve Martin, and Jason Schwartzman, all deliver refined, sensitive, and multi-layered performances that make this a very engrossing motion picture from start to finish.

Director Anand Tucker (“Hilary and Jackie” 1998) did an excellent job at the helm of this project, from the well-written screenplay by Steve Martin, which was adapted from his own 2000 novella of the same name. They created a film that is very insightful into romantic issues, rare for a film these days.

The supporting cast also had some great offerings, including Sam Bottoms, Frances Conroy, Rebecca Pidgeon, Gina Doctor, Clyde Kusatsu, Samantha Shelton, and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, wife of former tennis star Pete Sampras. Unfortunately, “Shopgirl” did not do well in theatrical release for Touchstone Pictures and Hyde Park Entertainment, but is a great view on DVD.
