My Review

The latest Robert Downey Jr. vehicle, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” is long on action sequences and short on plot. It takes at least thirty minutes for the storyline to kick in.

When it does, this second in the series is at least easier to follow than the original “Sherlock Holmes” of 2009. Holmes and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) take on nemesis Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris), who owns shares in weapons manufacturing firms, and intends to start a major war in Europe to make lots of money. Imagine that happening! Hans Zimmer composed the outstanding musical score to help the enjoyment of the motion picture action.

The supporting cast includes Rachel McAdams, Stephen Fry, Naomi Rapace, Kelly Reilly, Eddie Marsan, Paul Anderson, Geraldine James, Thierry Neuvic, Fatima Adoum, and William Houston. The cast might as well be operating on autopilot, but the real star of the show is the action and the FX. Director Guy Ritchie (“Swept Away” 2002) and screenwriters Michele Mulroney and Kiernan Mulroney made sure of that. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was successful at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures.
