My Review

John Wayne plays a retiring cavalry captain given some final assignments before his retirement in “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.” One is to smooth relations between the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian tribes after Custer’s last stand, and the other is to transport the wife and niece of his commanding officer to a safe location. This movie is superbly directed by John Ford (“My Darling Clementine” 1946) from a top-rate script penned by Frank S. Nugent and Laurence Stallings.

The supporting cast behind The Duke includes Joanne Dru as the niece, Mildred Natwick as the wife, George O’Brien as Wayne’s major, as well as John Agar, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Victor McLaglen, Noble Johnson, Arthur Shields, Fred Graham, Tom Tyler, Michael Dugan, George Sky Eagle as Chief Sky Eagle, and Chief John Big Tree as Pony-That-Walks.

The watchable “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” was a big hit at the box office for producer John Ford, Argosy Pictures, and RKO Radio Pictures. The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Winton C. Hoch) for the beautiful shooting locations in Monument Valley, Utah, in Technicolor.
