“Sex and the Single Girl” is a dark comedy about a magazine writer who tries to get an interview with a popular book author. When she refuses, he starts scheming and the comedy and drama proceeds from there. Most of this film is unremarkable comedy, due to unfocused direction by Richard Quine (“The World of Suzie Wong” 1960) and a mediocre script by Joseph Heller. There are some funny moments for sure, such as a car chase scene involving all cast members.
The stars of the show are Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Henry Fonda, Lauren Bacall, Mel Ferrer, Edward Everett Horton, Larry Storch, Fran Jeffries, Leslie Parrish, Stubby Kaye, Otto Kruger, and Barbara Bouchet in an uncredited cameo as a photographer. Fran Jeffries has some musical numbers with Count Basie and His Orchestra. The film is loosely based on Helen Gurley Brown’s 1962 book of the same name. “Sex and the Single Girl” was successful in theatrical release for Warner Bros. Pictures.
