My Review

“Sergeants 3” is a western comedy where three fun-loving U. S. Army sergeants in the Old West are captured by Indians, and their lives get serious when they must find a way to warn their regiment of plans of an impending ambush. Director John Sturges (“Bad Day at Black Rock” 1955) put together an entertaining vehicle for the Rat Pack, from an acceptable script by W. R. Burnett, which was to be the final movie to feature all five.

The stars of the show are Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Peter Lawford as the three sergeants, Sammy Davis Jr. as a former slave aspiring to be a trooper, and Joey Bishop as a sergeant major. Co-stars include Ruta Lee, Henry Silva, Buddy Lester, Hank Henry, Dick Simmons, Michael Pate, Richard Hale, Rodd Redwing, and Phillip Crosby, Dennis Crosby, and Lindsay Crosby (three of four sons of Bing Crosby from his first marriage).

The watchable “Sergeants 3” was popular at the box office for producers Frank Sinatra and Howard W. Koch, Meadway-Claude Productions Company, and United Artists. “Sergeants 3” and “Oceans 11” were the only two films featuring all five Rat Pack constituents. Others include different combinations such as Sinatra, Martin, & Davis in “Robin and the 7 Hoods” (1964) and “Cannonball Run II” (1984), Sinatra & Martin in “Some Came Running” (1958) and “4 For Texas” (1963), and Martin & Davis in “The Cannonball Run” (1981).
