My Review

“Sense and Sensibility” is the story of two sisters and their mother forced to move out of their home due to disinheritance by their father’s will. Living in a cottage on the estate of a distant relative, the girls experience love, romance, and heartache. This excellent period drama was the result of focused direction by Taiwanese director Ang Lee in his first English language film. He stated that he received much help from Emma Thompson, the star of the show and author of the screenplay, loosely based on the 1811 novel of the same name by Jane Austin.

Emma Thompson’s fellow cast members include Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Gemma Jones, Hugh Laurie, Tom Wilkinson, Imogen Stubbs, Greg Wise, Harriet Walker, James Fleet, Imelda Stanton, Robert Hardy, Elizabeth Spriggs, Emilie Francois, and Richard Lumsden as Robert Ferrars. “Sense and Sensibility” was successful at the box office for Columbia Pictures, Good Machine Productions, Mirage Enterprises, and Sony Pictures Releasing. It won a single Academy Award for Best Screenplay (Emma Thompson), out of seven nominations.
