My Review

“Send Me No Flowers” is a romantic comedy starring Rock Hudson, Doris Day, and Tony Randall, the third and final film they made together. Director Norman Jewison (“The Thrill of It All” 1963) was adept enough at the helm of the project to make this a high-quality, though predictable, comedic romp. Screenwriter Julius J. Epstein adapted the screenplay from the Broadway play of 1960.

This humorous movie is set in 1960’s suburbia and contains plenty of laughs. The supporting cast includes Clint Walker, Paul Lynde, Edward Andrews, Patricia Barry, Hal March, Clive Clerk, and veteran character actor Dave Willock as Ernie the Milkman. Burt Bacharach and Hal David composed the title song, performed by Doris Day.

Her husband’s production company, Martin Melcher Productions, made “Send Me Not Flowers” in partnership with Universal Studios, successful in theatrical release. Hudson and Day’s movie house can still be seen by anyone who takes the Universal Studios Tram tour. The two previous collaborations between Day and Hudson were “Pillow Talk” (1959) and “Lover Come Back” (1961).
