My Review

“Run Silent, Run Deep” is an exciting World War II drama starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster as the first officers of a submarine active in the North Pacific Ocean. Director Robert Wise (“Helen of Troy” 1956) wove details of submarine warfare into the story, along with elements of Captain Ahab of “Moby Dick” and the rivalry found in “Mutiny on the Bounty.” The excellent screenplay by John Gay was adapted from the 1955 novel by Edward L. Beach Jr.

Per usual, stars like Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster knew how to deliver outstanding performances in each and every film appearance. Not like the stars of today who are sometimes good and sometimes not so good! The supporting cast included Jack Warden, Don Rickles (in his film debut), Brad Dexter, Nick Cravat, Joe Maross, Mary LaRoche, Rudy Bond, and Eddie Foy III, grandson of the legendary vaudevillian Eddie Foy. “Run Silent, Run Deep” is a black-and-white film classic from United Artists.
