Italian director Franco Zeffirelli (“The Taming of the Shrew” 1967) was at the top of his game when he made the 1968 film version of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Outstanding production values includes a great screenplay that omitted long-winded speeches, marvelous performances by the actors, and fantastic period piece costumes and picturesque filming won this picture two Oscars (Best Costume and Best Cinematography) and two other nominations (Best Picture and Best Director).
Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey delivered indelible performances in the title roles. Beside their talent, the pair were teenagers, close to the real age of Bill Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. Co-stars include John McEnery, Milo O’Shea, Pat Heywood, Robert Stephens, Michael York, Bruce Robinson, and Laurence Olivier as the narrator. The memorable “Romeo and Juliet” was a huge blockbuster for BHE Films, Verona Produzione, Dino de Laurentiis Cinematografica, and Paramount Pictures.
