My Review

Everyone needs an occasional day off from work, and it would seem that European royalty are no different. Audrey Hepburn stars as a truant princess in “Roman Holiday.” She falls asleep on a park bench, and is discovered by an America reporter played by Gregory Peck. The romantic comedy and drama proceeds from there, well orchestrated by director William Wyler (“Detective Story” 1952), from a script by Dalton Trumbo and John Dighton.

The casting of newcomer Audrey Hepburn was a stroke of genius by the producers. Her vulnerability and sweet charm swept movie-goers off their feet, sweeping her to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her chemistry with Gregory Peck was another big factor in the film’s appeal and success. Co-stars include a bearded Eddie Albert in his usual “best friend” role, Margaret Rawlings, Hartley Power, Harcourt Williams, Tullio Carminati, Paolo Carlini, Claudio Ermelli, Paola Barboni, Alfredo Rizzo, Laura Solari, Gorella Gori, and Hans Hinrich as Dr. Bonnachoven.

The very watchable black-and-white movie “Roman Holiday” was a big hit at the box office for producer William Wyler and Paramount Pictures. Edith Head designed the costumes for young Hepburn and the rest of the cast, for which she won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Trumbo won the Academy Awards for Best Story, a total of three Oscar wins for “Roman Holiday.”
