My Review

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby started their famous “Road” pictures in 1940 with “Road to Singapore.” The pair play sailors being forced into undesirable marriages, and escape to Singapore by way of Hawaii. They run into Dorothy Lamour, and both fall in love with her, with hilarity and complications proceeding from there. Director Victor Schertzinger (“Paramount on Parade” 1960) held a loose hand on production as high jinks reportedly ruled on the set amongst the cast members.

Portions of the screenplay by Frank Butler and Don Hartman probably went out the window as some of the Hope-Crosby dialogue was adlibbed. Co-stars include Charles Coburn, Anthony Quinn, Jerry Colonna, Judith Barrett, Gaylord Pendleton, Fred Malatesta, and John Kelly and Kitty Kelly as a sailor and his wife. “Road to Singapore” was popular at the box office for Paramount Pictures. Films in the “Road” movie series were released in 1941, 1942, 1946, 1947, 1952, and 1962.
