Bob Hope and Bing Crosby’s road to hilarity continues with “Road to Bali.” This sixth of seven “Road” pictures, which also stars Dorothy Lamour, always contains minimal plot and storyline with a generous amount of ad-libbing. One such line has Hope quipping “It’s time to get popcorn” before a Crosby musical number. Thanks to director Hal Walker and script writers Frank Butler, Hal Kantor, and William Morrow. Co-stars include Carolyn Jones and Michael Ansara.
“Road to Bali” also has several celebrity cameos, including bandleader Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother), Jane Russell, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, and Humphrey Bogart, via a clip from “The African Queen” (1951). Also showing up is a giant squid, attempting to attack Bob Hope in an underwater scene. The squid had first appeared in “Reap the Wild Wind” (1942). The fun and watchable “Road to Bali” was popular in theaters for Bing Crosby Productions, Hope Enterprises, and Paramount Pictures.
