“Risen” is a finely crafted Biblical drama about a Roman Tribune appointed by Pontius Pilate to investigate reports that Jesus of Nazareth had risen from the dead after his very public crucifixion. Director Kevin Reynolds (“Waterworld” 1995) instilled the movie with outstanding production values, including the quality screenplay he wrote with Paul Aiello. The cinematography by Lorenzo Senatore deserves honorable mention for the beautiful photography shot in places like Malta and Spain.
The actors’ performances were simply exceptional. Joseph Fiennes portrayed the leading role of Tribune Clavius with all seriousness and the appropriate piety, which seemed to permeate the entire motion picture. Other cast members include Peter Firth as Pilate, Tom Felton as Lucius, Maria Botto as Mary Magdalene, Antonio Gil as Joseph of Arimathea, and Cliff Curtis as Jesus.
The very watchable faith-based film “Risen,” which could be shown in any Sunday School class, was a modest success at the box office for Affirm Films, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures.
