“Rich Man, Poor Man” is the story of two brothers and their different paths in life. One became a wealthy businessman and the other barely scraped by with jobs such as boxing to make ends meet. This miniseries was well directed by David Greene (Parts 1, 2, 7-9) and Boris Segal (Parts 3-6), from a great teleplay by Dean Riesner, based on the 1969 novel by Irwin Shaw.
The large cast is headed by Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte as the rich man and the poor man. Both fit their roles perfectly. Co-stars include Ed Asner, Dorothy McGuire, Susan Blakely, Fionulla Flanagan, Steve Allen, Bill Bixby, Kim Darby, Andrew Duggan, Norman Fell, Lynda Day George, Gloria Grahame, Murray Hamilton, Van Johnson, Kay Lenz, Dorothy Malone, George Maharis, Ray Milland, Robert Reed, Talia Shire, Dick Sargent, Craig Stevens, Dick Butkus, Mike Evans, and Lawrence Pressman.
The very watchable “Rich Man, Poor Man” won five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Directing (David Greene), Music Composition (Alex North), Lead Actor (Ed Asner), Lead Actress (Susan Blakely) and Supporting Actress (Fionulla Flanagan). The twelve episodes were aired over nine evenings from Feb. 1 to March 15, 1976, on the ABC television network, for a total of 577 minutes.
