My Review

“Rich and Famous” is a drama film that follows the friendship of two women from their college graduation in 1959 to 1981. The duo is portrayed by Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen, whose acting styles are very different. Bisset delivers her usual subtle performance, while Bergen seems to over-act as the southern belle from Atlanta.

Somehow this pairing works, thanks to director George Cukor, who uses his considerable motion picture experience in keeping the movie from disintegrating into another chick-flick. He gives “Rich and Famous” a certain style evident in many of his other famous projects: “The Philadelphia Story” (1940), “Adam’s Rib” (1949), “A Star is Born” (1954). This is his final film in a directorial career that started in 1930.

The supporting cast includes David Selby, Hart Bochner, Steven Hill, Michael Brandon, Nicole Eggert, Matt Latanzi, Fay Kanin, and Meg Ryan in her big screen debut, as Jackie Bisset’s niece. Several celebrities make cameo appearances including Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett, Frances Bergen, Roger Vadim, Ray Bradbury, and Nina Fouch.

The screenplay was written by Gerald Ayres, based on the 1940 play “Old Acquaintance” by British author John Van Druten. It was made into a major motion picture released in 1943 also called “Old Acquaintance” starring Bette Davis, Miriam Hopkins, and Gig Young.

The watchable glitzy and glossy “Rich and Famous” was a big flop at the box office for United Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor.
