My Review

“Rhapsody” is a romantic musical drama about a young woman courted by two classical musicians, one a violinist and one a pianist. She spends most of the film trying to decide between the two. While this melodrama is playing out, the audience can enjoy the numerous classical music segments from Franz Liszt, P. I. Tchaikovsky, Felix Mendelssohn, and others. The film was expertly directed by Charles Vidor (“Hans Christian Andersen” 1952).

The star of the show is Elizabeth Taylor in her prime at the age of 22. “Rhapsody” is definitely a Liz Taylor vehicle, less than popular at the box office, but Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer re-released it in 1962 to benefit from the publicity surrounding La Liz and “Cleopatra.” Co-stars include Vittorio Gassman and John Ericson as her two gentlemen callers, Louis Calhern as Liz’s father, as well as Stuart Whitman, Madge Blake, Barbara Bates, Richard Hageman, Celia Lovsky, Richard Lupino (cousin of Ida Lupino), and Gordon Richards as the English butler.
