My Review

“Raintree County” is an attention-grabbing melodrama about an Indiana man (Montgomery Cliff) who is torn between two women, played by Elizabeth Taylor and Eva Marie Saint. The story is set in the Civil War in the North, and was criticized as a clone of “Gone With the Wind.” It was a big hit at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

This three-hour movie was well crafted by director Edward Dmytryk and screenwriter Millard Kaufman, adapted from the 1948 novel of the same name by Ross Lockridge Jr. Co-stars include Nigel Patrick, Lee Marvin, Rod Taylor, Agnes Moorehead, Walter Abel, Jarma Lewis, Tom Drake, Rhys Williams, Russell Collins, Myrna Hansen, and DeForest Kelley in a small role as a Confederate Army officer. Kelley was a few years away from his break-out role as Dr. Leonard McCoy in television’s and movie’s “Star Trek.”
