“Race” is an excellent biopic about athlete Jesse Owens, who won a record four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games in Belin. Among the subject matter probed in the film was the irony of his participation in the Olympics against Hitler’s Germany when he and fellow African-Americans faced discrimination back home in the U. S.
Screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse handled the sensitive topics very delicately and directly. Director Stephen Hopkins (“Lost in Space” 1998) lent his expert hand to the project. This independent film was released by Focus Features, and was a modest success in theatrical release.
Actor Stephan James delivered an engaging performance as Owens, carrying the picture. The supporting cast includes Jason Sudeikis as Owens’ coach Larry Snyder. We usually see Sudeikis in comedies; he did well in a drama like this one. Other actors include Jeremy Irons, William Hurt, Carice Van Houten, Barnaby Metschurat, Sanice Banton, Amanda Crew, Giacomo Gianniotti, and Jeremy Ferdman.
