My Review

Joan Crawford is in full villainous form in the melodrama “Queen Bee.” Based on the 1949 novel by Edna L. Lee, this movie tells the story of a bossy and domineering woman’s harsh dealings with family members who reside in a large Georgia mansion.

Director-screenwriter Ranald MacDougall (“The World, The Flesh, and the Devil” 1959) capably handled his job well enough to make this a watchable motion picture, with quality lines for the large group of actors. They include John Ireland, Betsy Palmer, Barry Sullivan, Lucy Marlow, William Leslie, Tim Hovey, Linda Bennett, Katherine Anderson, and Fay Wray, still going strong in Tinseltown some 22 years after her big screen break in “King Kong” (1933).

However, “Queen Bee” is definitely a Joan Crawford vehicle, a “Bee” movie from Columbia Pictures, nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography.
