My Review

“Prince of Foxes” is the story of Italian nobleman Andrea Orsini and his sometimes underhanded work for Cesare Borgia (son of Pope Alexander VI). This exciting drama was intended as a vehicle for Tyrone Power, a major star at 20th Century Fox in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Indeed, Power did deliver a thrilling leading man performance, more than capably directed by Henry King (“Jesse James” 1939).

The screenplay was written by Milton Krims, adapted from Samuel Shellabarger’s popular 1949 novel of the same name. Orson Welles, always a strong presence on the big screen, appeared as Cesare Borgia, with co-stars Wanda Hendrix, Marina Berti, and Everett Sloan.

The handsomely filmed picture was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Black and White Cinematography and Best Costume Design. The watchable “Prince of Foxes” was popular in theatrical release in 1949 for Fox.
