My Review

“Portrait in Black” is melodrama film about a woman caring for her ailing elderly husband. Her boyfriend is also the attending physician. When the husband passes away, a high profile murder investigation ensues, with the heavy drama proceeding from there. Director Michael Gordon (“Pillow Talk” 1959) and screenwriters Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts ensure top rate productions values in this high-quality soap opera.

The stars include Lana Turner as the wife, Lloyd Nolan as the husband, Anthony Quinn as the doctor, along with Sandra Dee, Richard Basehart, John Saxon, Ray Walston, Virginia Grey, Anna May Wong, John Wengraf, and Paul Birch. This was the final film appearance of Anna May Wong, whose first movie was a silent film called “The Red Lantern” in 1919 from Metro Pictures Corporation, a forerunner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

There’s loads of drama and thrills, chills, and spills in the very watchable soap opera “Portrait in Black,” which was very successful at the box office for producer Ross Hunter, Ross Hunter Productions, and Universal Pictures.
