My Review

“Pocketful of Miracles” is the story of a homeless bag lady who must pose as a high society matron for a day, simply because her daughter is coming to town. This touching drama was directed by Frank Capra in his final film job. It is a remake of his1933 movie “Lady For a Day.” The script was penned by Hal Kanter and Harry Tugend.

The stars include Bette Davis in the lead role, with Ann-Margret making her film debut as her daughter. Thomas Mitchell, well known as Scarlett O’Hara’s father in “Gone With The Wind” (1939), made his final movie appearance here. Other cast members are Glenn Ford, Hope Lange, Peter Falk, Edward Everett Horton, Mickey Shaughnessy, David Bryan, Sheldon Leonard, Peter Mann, Ellen Corby, Jack Elam, Mike Mazurki, Barton MacLane, Jay Novello, Benny Rubin, and Jerome Cowan as the mayor.

“Pocketful of Miracles” was a successful swan song at the box office for producer Frank Capra, Franton Productions, and United Artists. It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor (Peter Falk), Best Costume Design (Edith Head), and Best Song (“Pocketful of Miracles” music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Sammy Cahn).
