“Planet of the Apes” is a science fiction action film telling the story of a human astronaut crash landing on the planet Ashlar, which is ruled by apes. They treat humans as slaves, and the astronaut starts a rebellion with the help of one of the apes. Director Tim Burton (“Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” 1985) put together quite an exciting film that is a remake of the original “Planet of the Apes” of 1968, with modern special effects and skillful writing to emphasize an action-adventure storyline. The excellent screenplay was penned by William Broyles Jr., Lawrence Konner, and Mark Rosenthal. As with the original, it was also based on the 1963 novel by French author Pierre Boulle.
The stars include Mark Wahlberg as the astronaut and Helena Bonham Carter as the chimp who aids him in his insurrection. Ape actors include Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Gary Warner, Lisa Marie, and Glenn Shadix. Portrayers of human slaves include Kris Kristofferson, Estella Warren, Erick Avari, Luke Eberl, Evan Dexter Parke, Anne Ramsey, Freda Foh Shen, Chris Ellis, and Melody Perkins. Cameos include Charlton Heston as an ape (Roth’s father) and Linda Harrison as the woman in the cart. Both appeared in the first two films.
The watchable “Planet of the Apes” was a big hit at the box office for producer Richard D. Zanuck, The Zanuck Company, and 20th Century Fox. Despite its financial success, Fox and Burton decided against a sequel. 20th Century Fox later rebooted the film franchise starting in 2011 with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, and Andy Serkis as Caesar.
