“People Like Us” stars Chris Pine as a man who, after the death of his estranged father, discovers he has a half-sister. Director Alex Kurtzman does an excellent job in his first job behind the camera. The story is plainly told and clearly unfolded, from an excellent screenplay that Kurtzman wrote with Jody Lambert and Robert Orci.
The cast behind Pine is excellent, with Elizabeth Banks as his new-found sister, Olivia Wilde plays his girl friend, Michelle Pfeiffer plays his mom, and youngster Michael Hall D’Addario is Banks’ eleven-year-old son. Others include Mark Duplass, Jon Favreau, and Phillip Baker Hall.
Although not a big hit at the box office for DreamWorks Pictures and Walt Disney Studios, this very watchable film displays the value of family and the benefits of forgiveness. It could be the story of any of our families, realistically portraying “People Like Us.”
