My Review

“Peggy Sue Got Married” is a comedy-drama film about a woman on the verge of a divorce, and attending her twentieth high school reunion, who suddenly finds herself transported back to her senior year in high school in 1960. An excellent performance by Kathleen Turner in the lead role earned her an Oscar nomination, with expert direction by Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather” 1972) and a sterling screenplay by Jerry Leichtling and Arlene Sarner.

The rest of the cast did a good job in supporting roles, except for Nicolas Cage as Turner’s husband. He is an actor with a limited range of acting, as he has demonstrated throughout his career. He probably only got this job because he is nephew of the director. Others include Catherine Hicks, Barry Miller, Joan Allen, Kevin J. O’Connor, Don Murray, Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, Lisa Jane Persky, Lucinda Jenney, Will Shriner, Barbara Harris, Glenn Withrow, Marshall Crenshaw, and Sophia Coppola, daughter of the director.

Veteran Hollywood film stars appearing here include Leon Ames, Maureen O’Sullivan, and John Carradine. This was the final movie role for Ames, and among the last for the the other two. All started their big screen career around 1930. Besides the Oscar nomination for Turner, two other nods went to Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography. “Peggy Sue Got Married” was successful in theatrical release for American Zoetrope, Delphi VI Productions, Rastar Productions, and TriStar Pictures.
