My Review

“Patterns” is a boardroom drama about a man brought into a large company who soon discovers that he was hired to replace the friendly but ailing vice president. A battle of wills ensues between him and the company’s president, with the heavy drama proceeding from there. Director Fielder Cook put together an absorbing look into the rough-and-tumble world of corporate politics, with a sterling screenplay written by Rod Serling. It was originally a teleplay aired in 1955 on “Kraft Television Theater,” also penned by Serling.

The talented cast delivered riveting performances, such as Van Heflin as the new hire, Everett Sloane as the rough-hewn head of the corporation, Ed Begley as the hapless VP, Beatrice Straight as Heflin’s wife, Elizabeth Wilson as Begley’s loyal secretary, Joanna Roos as Sloane’s secretary, Andrew Duggan as head of purchasing, Jack Livesey as chief engineer, and Edward Binns as the elevator operator. The watchable “Patterns” was a flop at the box office for United Artists.
