My Review

“Papillon” is the true story of Frenchman Henri Charriere, falsely convicted of murder and imprisoned in the infamous prison in French Guiana’s Devil’s Island. The film was based on Charriere’s 1969 autobiography and the 1973 movie with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

The production values and performances were good enough, thanks to Danish director Michael Noer and screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski. However, the pace of the film was uneven, sluggish and boring in parts. The cast was headed by Charlie Hunnam as Charriere and Rami Malek as his friend Louis Dega.

“Papillon” is an independent production of filmmakers from Europe and America, and did not make money in theatrical release.
