My Review

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell star in the classic romantic comedy “Overboard.” The couple transfer some chemistry from their real-life relationship to the big screen in this funny motion picture skillfully directed by Garry Marshall (“Nothing in Common” 1986), with a well written, though somewhat predictable, screenplay by Leslie Dixon.

Hawn plays a snobbish millionaire who refuses to pay Russell for some carpentry work. He later gets revenge when he learns that she has amnesia, convinces her that she is his wife, and proceeds to work her to the bone. So much hilarity proceeds from there, reminiscent of the old Hollywood screwball comedies.

The supporting cast includes Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Roddy McDowall, Michael G. Haggerty, Jerod Rushton, Hector Elizondo, Sven-Ole Thorsen, Garry Marshall, Ray Combs, Frank Buxton, and the Wright Brothers Band. The watchable “Overboard” barely made a profit at the box office for producer Roddy McDowall, Star Partners Ltd., and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. An inferior remake of the same name came out in 2018.
