My Review

In “Outland,” Sean Connery plays a marshal on Jupiter’s moon Io battling drug dealers and other criminals, while receiving very little support from the local mining community. This exciting and well-paced science fiction version of “High Noon” (1952) was finely crafted by director-screenwriter Peter Hyams (“Capricorn One” 1978).

The supporting cast behind Connery included Peter Boyle, Francis Sternhagen, James Sikking, Kika Markham, Nicholas Barnes, Clarke Peters, Steven Berkoff, Bill Bailey, John Ratzenberger. Connery’s fine performance is just one of many in his film career that began in 1954 and took off in 1962 when he took on the job as the original James Bond.

The watchable “Outland,” which contains very good special effects and an excellent sound track by Jerry Goldsmith, was nominated for one Oscar (Best Sound). It was not a big hit at the box office for The Ladd Company and Warner Bros. Pictures, but a fun watch on dvd today.
