My Review

“Our Very Own” is a feel-good coming-of-age drama centered around a young man trying for a better life in a small town in Tennessee in 1978. Producer-director-screenwriter Cameron Watson put together a fine motion picture with good character development, focused direction, and good acting in his motion picture debut.

The cast includes Jason Ritter in the lead role, with Allison Janney and Keith Carradine as his parents. The supporting cast includes Autumn Reeser, Hilarie Burton, Cheryl Hines, Beth Grant, Faith Prince, and Dale Dickie. Mary Badham also co-starred, her first film appearance since playing Gregory Peck’s daughter in 1962’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, losing to Patty Duke in “The Miracle Worker.”

“Our Very Own” was viewed at various film festivals in 2005, but was never shown in general release to movie theaters. It was released to DVD in 2007.
