“Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” is a action spy movie from producer-director Guy Ritchie (“Aladdin” 2019). This is the story of a British spy trying to retrieve a high tech devise from criminals who intend to sell it to the highest bidder. As is usual with Ritchie’s films, there is a flurry of activity with mediocre writing that fails to elevate the movie into a top-notch thriller. Also typical is Ritchie co-writing the screenplay, this time with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.
The cast includes very talented actors who deliver in the performance department, including Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Carey Elwes, Josh Hartnett, Bugsy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant, who seems to be doing a Michael Caine impression for the entire two hours of the picture. Others include Peter Ferdinando, Lourdes Faberes, Max Beesley, Eugenia Kuzmina, and Tom Rosenthal.
The borderline watchable/unwatchable “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” which in French means “a ruse, or trick, of war.” was not very successful at the box office or streaming for Miramax, STXfilms, AZ Celtic Films, Toff Guy Films, Lionsgate Films, and Amazon Prime Video.
