My Review

The comedy-drama film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is without a doubt the best movie of 2019. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning two: Best Production Design and Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor. Producer-director-screenwriter Quentin Tarantino designed this picture that is enormously entertaining on so many levels, with many diverse segments: A “reimagining” of the Charles Manson gang and his victims, a nostalgic look back at Los Angeles in the 1960’s, a comical look at Leonardo DiCaprio filming a television show and a general inside look at Hollywood, a visit by Pitt to the Manson gang-infested Spahn movie ranch, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate popping into a matinee showing of one of her movies (“The Wrecking Crew” with Dean Martin), and much more.

Tarantino certainly got some dazzling performances out of the cast, starting with the three principals DiCaprio, Pitt, and Robbie. There is great chemistry between DiCaprio and Pitt as the aging Hollywood star and his stuntman, respectively. Robbie was simply stunning in her sympathetic portrayal of Sharon Tate. Others include Dakota Fanning as Squeaky, Bruce Dern as George Spahn, Emile Hirsch as Jay Sebring, Mike Moh as Bruce Lee, Damien Lewis as Steve McQueen, Rumer Willis as Joanna Pettet, Rebecca Ritttenhouse as Michelle Phillips, Austin Butler as Tex, as well as Timothy Olyphant, Al Pacino, Brenda Vaccaro, Nicholas Hammond, Samantha Robinson, Costa Ronin, James Remar, Zoe Bell, and Kurt Russell as the narrator. Clu Gulager and Luke Perry made their final film appearances here.

It has been stated that some of the best films ever made have been Hollywood making movies about Hollywood. If that’s true, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” qualifies as a great and watchable motion picture. Thank you Quentin Tarantino, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures.
