My Review

“On the Town” is one of the best musical films of all time which features Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin as three sailors on leave in New York City. Roger Edens and Lennie Hayton won the pictures sole Academy Award for Best Musical Score.

The directorial team of Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen were absolute gold on this project, as they would be in the near future in 1952’s “Singing in the Rain.” The screenplay was penned by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, who wrote the original Broadway stage play of 1944 with Leonard Bernstein.

The supporting cast includes Betty Garrett, Ann Miller, and Vera-Ellen as the three girl friends, and Florence Bates, Alice Pearce, George Meader, Hans Conried, and Bea Benaderet in her first speaking role in a cameo as a girl on the subway.

Memorable dance numbers from Miller and song-and-dance from Sinatra and Kelly were indeed highlights of the very watchable Technicolor blockbuster “On the Town” from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
