My Review

“On an Island with You” is a film that has everything that makes for great entertainment: Comedy, romance, drama, musical numbers, and exclusive water ballets featuring Esther Williams, all in beautiful Technicolor. Director Richard Thorpe (“A Date with Judy” 1948) made it all possible from a marvelous screenplay by Charles Martin and Hans Wilhelm.

The supporting cast includes Peter Lawford and Ricardo Montalban as Williams’ competing love interests, Cyd Charisse, Leon Ames, Kathryn Beaumont, Dick Simmons, Jimmy Durante, and Xavier Cugat and his orchestra with top-notch musical numbers. The very watchable “On an Island with You” was the tenth highest grossing film of 1948 for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
