My Review

Casino owner Terry Benedict finally locates Danny Ocean and his friends three years after they robbed his casino of nearly $200 million dollars in “Ocean’s Twelve.” He demands they return the money with interest, or pay a heavier price, so Ocean’s crew scrambles to come up with the cash. Director Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic” 2000) put together a worthy sequel to “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001) with good production values, top-rate performances, etc. The only flaw is that the narrative of Ocean’s new heists in Europe are a bit difficult to follow, due to the sometimes confusing screenplay by George Nolfi.

The cast once again is headed by George Clooney as Danny Ocean, with Andy Garcia as Benedict and newcomer Catherine Zeta-Jones as a Europol detective. The twelve (with Clooney) are Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Carl Reiner, Elliot Gould, Qin Shaobo, and Eddie Jemison. Co-stars include Vincent Cassel, Robbie Coltrane, Cherry Jones, Albert Finney, with Bruce Willis and Topher Grace in cameos as themselves.

Although a slightly inferior sequel, “Ocean’s Twelve” is still a glossy and glitzy and watchable movie, the tenth highest grossing film of 2004 for Village Roadshow Pictures, Jerry Weintraub Productions, Section Eight Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures. A third film in the series called “Ocean’s Thirteen” would be released in 2007 featuring most of the original ensemble cast.
