Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks have outstanding chemistry as father and son in the comedy-drama “Nothing in Common.” Director Garry Marshall (“Young Doctors in Love” 1982) got the most out of his actors in this story of a young man dealing with the separation of his elderly parents. It marked the final role for Gleason, who first appeared on the big screen in 1941’s “Navy Blues.”
By contrast, “Nothing in Common” was an early movie for Hanks, and his first serious part. Co-stars include Eva Marie Saint, Hector Elizondo, Barry Corbin, Sela Ward, Bess Armstrong, John Kapelos, Carol Messing, and Frank Campanella. Screenwriters Rick Podell and Michael Preminger provided some great lines for these actors in this modest success in theatrical release for Delphi Films, Rastar Productions, and TriStar Pictures.
