My Review

“North Country” is a dramatization of the events surrounding the first sexual harassment lawsuit in U. S. history. The screenplay by Michael Seitzman was adapted from the 2002 book “Class Action” by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler. Director Niki Caro (“Whale Rider” 2002) was a bit shaky at the helm, as the pace of the movie was uneven, with a slow beginning and a recovery after the first sluggish 45 minutes.

Charlize Theron seems to conjure up empathy from the audience in the lead role, about a female mine worker toiling in a male-dominated industry in northern Minnesota. She was nominated for an Oscar. Frances McDormand plays her friend and co-worker, a native of the region and a resident of nearby “Fargo” (1996), also earned an Oscar nod. The cast also includes Richard Jenkins, Sissy Spacek, Woody Harrelson, Sean Bean, Michelle Monaghan, Jeremy Renner, and Corey Stoll.

“North Country” was not successful in theatrical release for Warner Bros. Pictures.
