“No Way Out” is an action thriller movie about a Navy Lieutenant Commander who finds out that his girl friend is also involved with the Secretary of Defense. When she turns up dead, problems for all increase exponentially, making for quite a dandy of a nail-biter, worthy of comparison to an Alfred Hitchcock film. Director Roger Donaldson (“The Bounty” 1984) put together a taut drama, from an excellent screenplay by Robert Garland, who adapted it from the 1946 novel “The Big Clock” by Kenneth Fearing. The suspense lasts for the entire 114 minute running time.
At the head of the cast is Gene Hackman as the Defense Secretary, delivering one of many fine performances in his long career. Kevin Costner plays the Navy guy and Sean Young is the girl friend, with a supporting cast that includes Will Patton, Howard Duff, George Dzundza, Fred Thompson, Jason Bernard, Dennis Burkley, Iman, Marshall Bell, John D’Aquino, David Paymer, Robert Kerman, and Chris D. The very watchable “No Way Out” was a big hit at the box office for producer Robert Garland and Orion Pictures. Maurice Jarre composed the excellent musical score.
