My Review

Producer-director Jeff Radice has put together a documentary film on the life and times of baseball player Dock Ellis, who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1968-1979, mostly for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ellis had a drug problem, for which he later recovered from after going through rehab. He is most famous for his no-hitter on June 12, 1970, against the San Diego Padres at San Diego Stadium. Ellis claimed that he was under the influence of LSD for the entire game.

Independent filmmaker Radice interviewed family members and teammates, including Pirates pitcher Larry Demery and baseball fan Ron Howard. Ellis spent much of his post-MLB career counseling and helping out people with drug problems. He passed away in 2008.

Dock Ellis was also part of the Pirates’ all Black lineup, the first all minority lineup in Major League Baseball history on September 1, 1971, when the Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-7. “No No: A Dockumentary” is an interesting look at the life of a colorful American.
