The Best Picture of 2007 is….”No Country for Old Men.” This modern-day Western crime thriller tells the story of a West Texas local (Josh Brolin) who stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong with dead bodies and two million dollars in cash. He steals the cash, and soon a hitman (Javier Bardem) and the local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) are on his trail. This sounds like an exciting show, but producers-directors-screenwriters Joel Coen and Ethan Coen have filled the movie with so much violence and gore that it ruins the entertainment value of the film. There is also lack of a positive protagonist for the audience to root for. It is based on a 2005 novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy.
All three lead actors, Brolin, Bardem, and Jones seem to slog through their performances in robotic fashion. The supporting cast is not any better, which includes Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, Tess Harper, Barry Corbin, Stephen Root, Beth Grant, Garret Dillahunt, Rodger Boyce, Caleb Jones, Gene Jones, Josh Blaylock, and Kathy Lampkin. The unwatchable “No Country for Old Men” was successful at the box office for Mike Zoss Productions, Scott Rudin Productions, Paramount Vantage, Miramax Films, and Paramount Pictures. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Bardem).
