My Review

“Next Goal Wins” is a sports comedy-drama film about a soccer coach’s efforts to transform the American Samoa National Football Team, considered one of the worst in the world, into a contender for the Oceania Football (Soccer) Confederation first round of games to go to the 2014 FIFA World Cup games.

Director Taika Waititi (“Boy” 2010) did an excellent job at the helm of this project that has the right combination of comedy, sports drama, good performances, and the all-important “heart” that causes the audience to root for American Samoa’s football team, even if he or she is not a soccer fan. Waititi co-wrote the excellent screenplay with Iain Morris, adapted from the 2014 documentary film of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison.

The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightly, David Fane, Rachel House, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Moss, Uli Latukefu, Rhys Darby, Angus Sampson, Frankie Adams, Kaitlin Dever, Luke Hemsworth, and Taika Waititi as the American Samoa priest. “Next Goal Wins” was a modest hit at the box office for Imaginarium Productions, TSG Entertainment, Defender Films, Garrett Basch Production, and Searchlight Pictures. It was filmed in Honolulu, Hawaii.
