Tom Hanks has another great movie out called “News of the World.” This western, capably directed by Paul Greengrass, who worked with Hanks on “Captain Phillips” back in 2013, features a story with outstanding character development and superior production values, which explains the four Oscar nominations: Production design, original score, cinematography, and sound.
The film is set in 1870, a compelling tale of a Civil War veteran helping an orphan girl find her family, adapted from the 2016 western novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles. Helena Zengel, the talented young German actress in the lead role, demonstrates considerable on-screen chemistry with Hanks; they share most scenes in the picture.
The supporting cast includes Mare Winningham, Michael Covino, Fred Hechinger, Thomas Frances Murphy, and Elizabeth Marvel, familiar to television viewers as President Elizabeth Keane on “Homeland” and Heather Dunbar on “House of Cards.” The very watchable “News of the World” reminds us of the old fashioned Hollywood westerns, a satisfying two hours of movie viewing from Universal Pictures.
