My Review

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is the third in the series of vacation movies from prolific movie-maker John Hughes. The producer-screenwriter infused the picture with enough laughs to make it a holiday favorite, screened on cable television each and every Christmas. Good direction by Jeremiah S. Chechik also helped, in his big screen debut.

The story has Clark Griswold making every effort to create a perfect Christmas for his family. But numerous factors intervene to sabotage his plans, including his wife’s cousin and family arriving unexpectedly and parking their RV in the driveway. Also, Clark’s Christmas bonus at work did not come through. This and more kept the comedy coming.

The large cast is headed by Chevy Chase at the height of his career, with his patented brand of physical comedy. The cast also includes Beverly D’Angelo as his wife Ellen, Juliet Lewis and Johnny Galecki as their children, John Randolph and Diane Ladd as Clark’s parents, E. G. Marshall and Doris Roberts as D’Angelo’s dad & mum, along with Randy Quaid, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cody Burger, William Hickey, Brian Doyle-Murray, Nicholas Guest, Miriam Flynn, Sam McMurray, Natalia Nogulich, Nicolette Scorsese, and Doug Llewelyn as the Parade Announcer. Veteran actress Mae Questel appeared as Clark’s Aunt Bethany in her final motion picture appearance. Her first film was in 1931 as the voice of Betty Boop in “Silly Scandals.”

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” was a hit at the box office for Hughes Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. There have been a total of seven “Vacation” films including “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), “National Lampoon’s European Vacation” (1985), “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989), “Vegas Vacation” (1997), “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2” (2003), “Hotel Hell Vacation” (2010), and “Vacation” (2015).
