Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood (“Unforgiven” 1992) has come up with another gem with “Mystic River.” This crime drama is about three Boston boyhood friends who run into trouble as adults when the daughter of one them is murdered.
Expert production and direction by Eastwood and an excellent screenplay by Brian Helgeland, adapted from the 2001 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, made this an extremely engrossing and watchable film despite some very heavy subject matter.
Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, and Sean Penn were excellent leads, with a talented supporting cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, Laura Linney, Tom Guiry, Kevin Chapman, and Eli Wallach in an uncredited cameo appearance.
“Mystic River” won two Oscars, Penn for Best Actor and Robbins for Best Supporting Actor. There were four other nominations, Harden for Best Supporting Actress, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The big winner was the movie going public, as the film as a hit at the box office, making Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros. Pictures very happy.
