My Review

“Mystic Pizza” is a superior coming-of-age romantic drama-comedy starring Julia Roberts in her first box office hit. She is one of three young women working in a pizza restaurant, with their boyfriends and hopes for the future in tow.

The screenplay by Amy Holden Jones tastefully portrays the drama in their lives. Director Donald Petrie, also in his big screen debut, keeps the numerous subplots gliding gracefully around each other like fishing ships and sailing ships in and out of a New England port town, much like the Connecticut and Rhode Island locales used in location shoots.

Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish, and Lili Taylor make a great ensemble here. They have very good chemistry between themselves and other cast members as well, including Vincent D’Onofrio, William R. Moses, Conchata Ferrell, Adam Storke, Joanna Merlin, Ann Flood, Suzanne Shepherd, and Matt Damon as Steamer Windsor. Damon also makes his first motion picture appearance here.

It was all superstardom for Julia Roberts and Matt Damon after being showcased in the watchable “Mystic Pizza,” a modest success in theatrical release for The Samuel Goldwyn Company.
