My Review

“My Friend Flicka” is a western drama about a ten-year-old boy who is given a young horse to raise as his own. The boy’s parents soon regret their decision as the filly is very high spirited and a bit wild. However, the boy and his horse soon become fast friends. Director Harold D. Schuster (“Girl Trouble” 1942) put together a warm-hearted family film with outstanding production values. The script was written by Lillie Hayward and Francis Edward Faragoh, adapted from the 1941 children’s novel by Mary O’Hara.

The star of the show is Roddy McDowall. He demonstated exceptional performing talents here, and went on to a long motion picture career that lasted from 1938 to 1998. Co-stars include Preston Foster and Rita Johnson as his parents, James Bell, Diana Hale, Arthur Loft, and Jeff Corey as Tim. Cinematographer Dewey Wrigley was in charge of the beautiful filming in Technicolor in the state of Utah, including Zion National Park. The watchable “My Friend Flicka” was a hit at the box office for 20th Century Fox.
