My Review

Producer-director Steven Spielberg (“E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial” 1982) made a film that looks at the events surrounding the Israeli government’s retaliation against the Palestine Liberation Organization for the murder of eleven of their athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics in “Munich.” The nearly three hour picture was well-directed from an outstanding screenplay by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth. Spielberg and co-producer Kathleen Kennedy paid close attention to historic detail, based on the 1984 book “Vengeance” by George Jonas.

There were some gritty performances by a great ensemble of actors, such as Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Ciaran Hinds, Mathieu Kassovitz, and Hanns Zischler as the team of Mossad agents. Others include Geoffrey Rush, Omar Metwally, Ayelet Zurer, Mehdi Nebbou, Karim Saleh, Marie-Josee Croze, and Lynn Cohen as Prime Minister Golda Meir.

“Munich” was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score by (who else?) John Williams. (The Best Picture winner was “Crash.”) The film was only a modest success is theatrical release for Amblin Entertainment, The Kennedy/Marshall Company, and Universal Pictures.
